Pendine, Carmarthenshire
The village consists of two parts: the old hill-top settlement around the parish church, and the small harbour settlement on the shore. The latter developed into a small seaside resort during the 20th century. The seaside resort is best known for Pendine Sands, where Malcolm Campbell and J.G. Parry-Thomas set the world land speed record five times between 1924 and 1927. Parry-Thomas was killed while making a final record-breaking attempt on Pendine Sands in 1927.
The parish lies a few miles south of the linguistic boundary and is predominantly English-speaking."
BBC News - Public toilets offered to community councils again
Only those at Llansteffan, Ferryside, Pendine, Burry Port and Cenarth will remain under county council control.
Councils taking over any of the 28 other toilets will be given £1,000 and not be charged business rates.
Ammanford's mayor said she sympathised with the county council but said going to the toilet was a basic need.
It is the second time that Carmartheshire has tried to hand over most of its public toilets.
'We first wrote to the town and community councils in September last year to ask if they would consider taking over the responsibility for public conveniences,' said Coun Philip Hughes, executive board member for the environment."

Avon discovers historic speed record film in centenary year - | Motorcycle News | Bike News | Motorbike Videos | MCN
Having discovered the films, Avon's Global Motorcycle Sales Manager Graham Matcham said 'watching the films, we saw that it gives a unique window into our past. We soon had them converted into digital files so that we could show people how things were done way back when.'
This film shows land speed record holders Russell Wright and Bob Burns being interviewed by Vic Willoughby of The Motor Cycle in a film called 'The Wright Burns Records'. The great footage shows Wright hitting 187mph in July 1955 on a Vincent Black Lightning, with Burns subsequently attaching a third wheel to take the world sidecar record with a speed of 163mph, 'in spite of a wet road surface'.
Viewers are then taken to Pendine Sands, where further speed testing is being undertaken and we are told that 'technical"
My incredible tractor trip across Wales (eight months pregnant) - Farming News - Farming - Daily Post North Wales
WHEN Jo Roberts fell pregnant, she did not mull over baby names, pick out nursery colours or bore colleagues with pram talk.
Instead she planned a six-day tractor journey the length of Wales that was to be both a last grab at freedom and a life-affirming adventure.
And because she had to wait for maternity leave from her job at an undertakers, she was already eight months pregnant when she set off from Pendine Sands on her 160-mile trip."

10 days out for kids this summer | Travel | The Guardian
The Campbell family, famous for breaking land and water speed records in the 20th century, celebrate the centenary of their Bluebird car this year, and are showing no signs of slowing down. On 13 and 14 August, Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, will attempt to break his own electric land speed record of 137mph, as he aims for 150mph on a four-mile stretch of Pendine Sands in Carmarthenshire, where his grandfather set the world land speed record for the first time in 1924. With high adrenaline and fast cars, this will be an exciting weekend, with speed trials for the 500mph land speed attempt taking place, too.

I am a patron of The Tin Shed Experience, the World War 2 Museum in Laugharne, which is very keen to establish contact with anyone with memories, photographs or memorabilia of the US Army in Wales and in particular the 28th Infantry Division (Pennsylvania National Guard) stationed in Tenby between October 1943 and May 1944.
They are also desperate for mannequins for uniforms and period costume for a forthcoming exhibition.

Bluebird Electric Team Announces New UK Land Speed Record Date
The weekend of 13th/14th August 2011 will be a momentous occasion. Records are set to be broken and history made as Don Wales and the Bluebird Electric team endeavour to break the UK Land Speed Record on the 4-mile stretch of beach at Pendine Sands, South Wales.
Last month the attempt was aborted when a vital bespoke component that was being manufactured in Europe was not delivered. Disappointed in the firm, the team sought to find a UK engineering manufacturer, and were delighted when Dorset-based Transdev stepped in to the breach and support the team. Along with Transdev, the team has received overwhelming response from volunteers who are generously giving up their time to help marshal and assist the 30-strong Bluebird Electric team.
Don Wales and Bluebird Electric would also like to extend their thanks to the MSA and RAC, plus their sponsors Castrol, Aggreko, Ford, Goodyear, Dura, Bluestone and the Prince of Wales Hotel Pembrokeshire whose support and services have been invaluable throughout."

This is South Wales | Message for dog owners
Carmarthenshire Council is supporting National Poop Scoop Week 2011 which is being held from July 25 to 31.
Run by the Dogs Trust, the aim is to remind dog owners to pick up after their dog and help clean up our public spaces. While the majority of dog owners are responsible and pick up after their dog, a careless few are still giving dogs a bad name. Anyone not picking up after their pets could get a fixed penalty notice of £75 or face prosecution in court and a maximum fine of £1,000.
The council's poop scoop team will be out and about next week to raise awareness of dog fouling and its consequences.
They will be at Pendine beach car park on Thursday, July 28; and Llansteffan car park on Friday, July 29 between 11am and 2pm."

Team Bluebird returns to set new electric Land Speed Record | Car & SUV:
In the decades that followed, this family-based team broke more than 30 speed records and now, Sir Campbell’s own grandson, Don Wales, will attempt to make history once again over a century later.
This latest challenge is to break the UK LSR for an electric vehicle and the weapon of choice is the Bluebird Electric. The attempt will take place on the Pendine Sands at South Wales over the weekend of 13-14 August. The event was originally scheduled to take place earlier, but one key component was not delivered by an European constructor on time, so British-based Transdev built it instead.
The Bluebird team is 30 members-strong and will be using the event to not only make a play at the UK land speed record for electric vehicles but also to test the project car’s development. It’s main target is set for 2013 when Bluebird will attempt to break the 500 mph (805 km/h) barrier with its electric car."

Mermaid of Pendine
Stories of mermaids were fairly common during the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and there is even reference to a sighting in the journal of Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) for 9 January 1493. It was believed that mermaids could save sailors from drowning but could also lure ships to their doom."

Fresh concern as family pets vanish
For the third time in recent years, a number of pets have gone missing in the small village.
On previous occasions cats had been reported missing, two years before the mutilated bodies of three pets were found in the Pendine area. Shockingly, two of those cats had their heads and tails cut off.
Speaking about the latest incidents, former community councillor Julie Jones said her own ginger and white cat, Charity, had been missing for five weeks while a neighbour's grey and white cat had also disappeared.
Julie, who has lost cats before, said: "I find this very strange; she goes out at night but she's always here in the morning.
"She went missing weeks ago, she's just disappeared into thin air."
She said another cat, a pregnant grey and white female belonging to a local woman, had also gone.
Guinea pigs and rabbits have also been taken from neighbouring Llanmiloe.
Julie said: "When I've been putting up posters all this came out, there's one or two cats missing in Wood End as well, and guinea pigs and rabbits are missing.
"These are people's pets. Animals are actually missing, they are actually disappearing.
"At least you could see the evidence before, now there's no evidence at all."
Councillor Paul Bowring, of the Spring Well pub, said his son's girlfriend had lost two guinea pigs.
He said: "It could be anybody. The cats do get out but guinea pigs and rabbits — they don't get out.
"I just think it's probably a one-off, an opportunist thing, I don't think there's anything sinister."
Julie Fitzsimmonds, of Laugharne's Spar shop, said there had been a rise in the number of missing animals posters in the Laugharne area.
"We've had quite a lot of animals disappearing in the area.
"We have had lots of notices up in the shop, at one time three cats and four dogs.
"They've all come down but we did have a lot of them up, we did have a spate, they were all over the notice board."
RSPCA inspector Keith Hogben said the animal welfare group had not received any calls about disappearing animals.
However, he said that anyone who has lost pets in the area should contact the RSPCA.
Concerned owners should ring 0300 1234999.
