Welsh councils are offering free parking to drivers while cutting bus services - Wales News - News - WalesOnline
Welsh councils are offering free parking to drivers while cutting bus services - Wales News - News - WalesOnline: "PARKING giveaways are costing Welsh councils hundreds of thousands of pounds – while buses in some areas are threatened by budget cuts.
Free parking is designed to entice shoppers to a growing number of towns, but critics say it is unfair on people who do not have cars, undermines bus viability and ignores councils’ carbon reduction policies.
One green group even suggested turning surplus parking areas into public open spaces, because shoppers valued pleasant town centres.
Carmarthenshire is the latest council to offer free parking. This month it decided to suspend parking charges after 10am daily at the Llanelli multi-storey for a year, during town centre regeneration works.
The council will lose an estimated £222,000 in parking revenue.
It also opted for free parking in towns after 10am in the fortnight before Christmas, costing the council another £70,000.
Last March, Carmarthenshire withdrew two Pendine bus services. The council says it has not cut bus subsidies but no company had offered “realistic tenders” to run those services."

Keep rockin (From Western Telegraph)
Keep rockin (From Western Telegraph): "Venues with a good dance floor are few and far between and the loss of the De Valance was a big blow. We are very fortunate in the fact that we have been established at Whitland for about 3 years and have built up a very well supported club which allows us to bring some of the top bands (Jets, Firebirds etc) to this quiet corner of Wales and also to give significant sums to charities both locally and nationally.
Details can be obtained on our website www.westwalesrocknrollclub.webs.com or phone 01994 453220 There is a thriving club in Haverfordwest which is also having trouble with locating a regular venue."

TENBY TODAY | SPORT | Local soccer round-up: "In division three, Pendine suffered their sixth defeat of the season as they went down 4-1 away at Haverfordwest Cricket Club. Once again their defensive frailties were there for all to see and once again, Robbie Waters was there to score their only goal, but once again, the result was the reverse of what they wanted.
In stark contrast to their West Carmarthenshire neighbours, St. Clears continue to shine as they secured the biggest win of the day. The Saints marched in to slam nine past Hubberston, while conceding just one."

South Wales: Adventure at your own speed - UK, Travel - The Independent
South Wales: Adventure at your own speed - UK, Travel - The Independent: "That afternoon I head to Pendine Sands, a seven-mile stretch of beach washed perfectly flat by every outgoing tide. Dylan Thomas described it as a "yellow coldness going away into the distance of the sea". In the 1920s it was where Malcolm Campbell and JG Parry-Thomas contested the world land speed record.
Today, Morfa Bay Adventures is one of the few businesses allowed to open the throttle on the sands, though its wind-powered land yachts, speedy as they are, can't match the 170mph racked up by those racers of old. On the day I visit the wind isn't blowing, and so with my new-found kayaking skills we take to the sea instead and explore the caves and sea cliffs around Gilman Point to a hidden cove with a pebble beach. Jono Owen, an instructor for Morfa Bay, is clearly entranced by the area. "I did my teaching degree in London," he says as we try to kayak-surf some small waves back to the beach. "But I couldn't help being drawn back here. I don't know from day to day whether I'll be coasteering, surfing or kite surfing. I can't complain though," he says, surveying the scenery. "It's not a bad office, is it?""

TENBY TODAY | SPORT | Local soccer round-up
TENBY TODAY | SPORT | Local soccer round-up: "Pendine’s defence was once again in a generous mood as they let five goals slip into the back of the net in their home tie against Haverfordwest Cricket Club. Fortunately for the Seagulls, their offence was just as effective as they, too, slammed five past the visitors to push the match into penalties.
Robbie Waters’s fine hat-trick together with Ricky Hunt’s brace ensured the game went into the cruellest of ways in which to progress or bow out of the competition and they kept their cool to win 4-3 in what must have been one of the best spectacles in the league over the weekend."
