Beach race goes west for the weekend | This is South Wales

Beach race goes west for the weekend | This is South Wales: "PETROLHEADS need not despair after the cancellation of a motorcycle race in Swansea — because one is taking place in Carmarthenshire instead.

RHL Activities Ltd had been intending to run the Welsh Beach Race on Swansea Beach from Friday, March 2, through to Sunday, March 4.

But the race has now been delayed to allow time for further environmental safeguards to be put in place.

However, a motorcycle beach race is now taking place at Pendine Beach in west Carmarthenshire this Sunday, only the second time in 20 years the sands, famed for their use for land speed record attempts, have been used for such an event.

The motocross beach race, organised by the Dredgers Laugharne Motocross Club, follows on from an event held in late January."

'Our troops need these bomb tests' | This is South Wales: "A LAUGHARNE councillor has asked the community to give explosives testing measures at the nearby MoD site their support.

Concerns have been expressed at the noise generated by frontline bomb disposal training at the MoD range at Pendine, which is run by defence company QinetiQ.

Fat cyclists set for 1,200-mile US trek | This is South Wales

Fat cyclists set for 1,200-mile US trek | This is South Wales: "TWO Pendine cyclists, planning an epic ride through America's industrial heartland in aid of charity next month, have already raised a third of the funds planned.

Cyclists Andy Edwards and Phil Jenkins, known locally as the Two Fat Cyclists, are planning to ride 1,200 miles in just six days from Chicago to New York."

They hope to raise £12,000 for the Canolfan Plant Sir Gâr children's centre charity.

To date, they have raised £4,000, through events and donations.

They will be joined on the trip, which starts on Friday, March 9, by drivers Lyndon Williams and Gethin Jones.

To add to the challenge, they will be playing acoustic music gigs at various venues en route.

Andy said: "We're riding it as a relay. It's 100 miles each a day for a total of 600 miles each. We're calling it £12,000 for 1,200 miles."

The duo held a fundraising night at the Beach Hotel, Pendine, on February 3 and have a further event planned at Laugharne's New Three Mariners on February 24.

"The Beach Hotel was a great time, it's a real local thing with great community spirit," said Andy.

Back in 2009 Andy took part in an even more impressive 3,000 mile trip across the States, only to crash in torrential rain on the last day.

He is currently putting in the miles to get fit for the March ride.

"I'm training 20-30 miles every day and plan to do 100 miles on a Saturday."

Donations can be made at the justgiving website on www.justgiving.com/bandi.

Beach Racing

Historic Event at Pendine Sands in West Wales. After Many years since Car and Motorcycle Racing were held at the seven miles beach. On the 4th February 2012 history was made again as Motorcycles and Quads Raced there again. You can follow Motorcycle and Quad racing on www.mygrtowns.com.in Our Town Sports Section. A truly horrible day very cold and wet on this very famous beach where land speed records were broken in the 1920's. 120 rider turned out to make it a truly good day for the sport. It also gave the go ahead for a race meeting there next year.

Beach Racing February

On their bikes for racing day | This is South Wales

On their bikes for racing day | This is South Wales: "PENDINE Sands in Carmarthenshire has been echoing to the sound of motorcycles racing for the first time in more than 40 years over the weekend.

Motocross beach racing, organised by the Dredgers — Laugharne Motocross Club, took place on the sands on Saturday."

Cross Inn-based Anthony Roberts of the Dredgers — Laugharne Motocross Club said: "There were small jumps in there, it was like a motocross event.
"It's just to see how it goes, the last time they were racing was over 40 years ago; I took part in that myself.
"I'm actually in my sixth decade of racing, and I'm a Pendine boy, living in Laugharne."
He said previous plans to bring bike racing back to the sands had proved difficult to arrange as he was unable to get permission from the Ministry of Defence.
But after discovering the community council had taken over part of the beach, the sand racing was able to take place there.
