A beach, a backyard, the thwack of a ball on willow
A beach, a backyard, the thwack of a ball on willow: "Beach cricket is the essence of summer throughout the civilised cricketing world, writes John Huxley.
That's me. The little bloke with the dodgy bat and baggy shorts. The year is probably 1956 or '57, possibly summer, during a rare break in the rain for which our holidays in Wales were famous. Hence, the spoof tourism slogan: ''Wales. You're welcome to it.''
The place is certainly Pendine Sands, an 11-kilometre stretch of beach on the south coast so flat and wide that for decades it hosted world land-speed record attempts. Playing in the nearby dunes, we'd often stumble over bits of broken cars, even of boy racers.
That's my brother, in the even baggier shorts, appropriately standing behind two other planks of wood. And in the distance is my father, reduced it appears to bowling ''Aussie to Kiwi'' style as he waits for the tide to come in and/or the pubs to open.
Advertisement: Story continues below
My mother, a more-than-useful square leg, must be taking the picture. Everyone else, it seems, has got bored and gone home as I edge towards what I imagine must have been another double century. A legend on the beach, in my own backyard, in my own mind."

TENBY TODAY | SPORT | Local soccer round-up: "Pendine finished with a result that’s been all too familiar as they lost 4-0 to Pennar Robins’ second team.
The result keeps the Gulls rooted to the foot of the table with just five points from 14 games and with a lot of ground to make up in the New Year. "

PistonHeads Headlines - BMW M5 Olympic skidding: "BMW had a bit of a pre-Olympics shindig last week to preview its London 2012 involvement, giving thanks for the fact it had been 'chosen' to be the official vehicle supplier for the games.
And off the back of this or, perhaps a bit too much of the complimentary champagne, a 'precision driver' by the name of Wolfgang was sent off to Pendine Sands in Wales in an M5 to, erm, do donunts "help us [BMW that is] support the BMW London 2012 Performance Team athletes.""

Outside Edge: Is that a rocket in your pocket? - Others - More Sports - The Independent: "Sofa, so fast
Last week Doncaster Council seized an 8mph mobility scooter which was being driven around a park at 60mph with a souped-up 140cc petrol engine. Here are some other unlikely racing cars:
Rev Darrell Best of Illinois turned a 1940s fire engine into the world's fastest wedding chapel, which can reach speeds of 62mph.
Glenn Suter's sofa, complete with coffee table, fruit bowl and a 1.4-litre Suzuki superbike engine, reached 101mphin Sydney in September.
Martin Bacon reached 75mph in a 1974 Rover SD1 3500 powered by coffee grounds at Elvington in September.
Don Wales reached 87mph, a record for a sit-on lawn mower, last year on Pendine Sands, where his grandfather Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the land speed record in 1924."

The report states the site has a good wind speed and the Endurance model turbine is expected to generate 194.2 megawatt hours of electricity a year.
The application itself will be considered by county planners at a later date."
