Petrol-head beats land speed record - in a Smart car | Macclesfield Express - menmedia.co.uk
Petrol-head beats land speed record - in a Smart car | Macclesfield Express - menmedia.co.uk: "A motor-sport enthusiast has set three new British land speed records – in the car he uses to do the shopping.
Petrol-head Graeme Smith, 40, from Macclesfield, achieved the feats in a tiny one litre Smart car, on the ground where Sir Malcolm Campbell set the world land speed record in 1927.
A research scientist at Astra Zeneca in Alderley Edge, Graeme races small sports cars as a hobby and has won the Caterham Graduates championship four times.
He said he had been determined to set a land speed record after idolising Campbell and his son Donald as a youngster.
Graeme is now set to be confirmed as the speed record holder in a Class G diesel car – with an engine capacity of between 750 and 1100cc. He noticed no one had ever attempted the record in that class, so decided to travel up to Pendine Sands in South Wales to give it a go.
He tagged along with the Bluebird Electric team which was attempting to set a new record for an electric car, driven by Malcolm Campbell’s great-grandson Joe Wales.

This is South Wales | Second World War museum in a shed bid submitted to planners
The application to convert a 1930s corrugated steel shed, known as Bellevue Garage, in the township's Clifton Street to a museum have been submitted by owner Andrew Isaacs through agent Carl Thornton of Sarnau Design.
The retrospective application seeks a change of use for the building, known locally as the tin shed.
Work on the museum in the shed started in January 2010 and finished in July 2011.
The shed has already held several informal displays of Second World War memorabilia.
The museum proposal itself is a collaboration between Andrew Isaacs, a community councillor in Laugharne, and Seimon Pugh-Jones, a cameraman and photographer with a keen interest in World War Two."

BBC - Wales Nature: Record attempt foiled by jellyfish: "It's not every day you go to the beach and stumble across a world record attempt...
On Sunday I visited Pendine sands for the annual beach meeting of the Carmarthenshire Karate Club (as you do) but at the other end of the beach, father and son team, Don and Joe Wales were attempting to smash the UK electric land speed record.
Crowds of spectators, press and news camera crews had gathered, all watching and waiting to see if Joe could break the previous record set by his father of 137 mph in 2000.
As we watched, the team was returning to the starting point. It was quite a dramatic sight as several trucks and support vehicles shimmered along the sand with their headlights on. But as they drew nearer it became clear that the record attempt had failed."

PENDINE 77
Over a week ago, Pendine with a skip and two leads unavailable due to work or holidays, had to juggle their rinks to face Whitland on their green in an evening match.
On rink one, DKT’s regular rink was opposed by Colin and son Phil’s lads. Pendine’s quartet went out of the blocks in top gear with some superb bowls from lead Colin Thomas and second Curt Rance, added to by Dave Bosier and DKT, who were 13-0 up after five ends and 18-7 up after 10. Whitland rallied winning five ends on the trot, but then the match saw Pendine galvanise over the last seven ends to win 31-18.
Rink two had Geoff Hale move from third to skip in place of the unavailable Malcolm Thomas and lead Don James promoted to third to face Glyndwr Thomas’s rink of John R. Denny and Beano. Geoff’s lads bowled exceedingly well to hold a good Whitland rink to 18-18 on the 20th end, but dropped four on the last to lose 18-22."

Welsh beach becomes world’s largest set for a stop-motion film | Metro.co.uk
What at first looks like a child’s sand sculpture is actually a gigantic film set for a stop-motion animation feature.
The beach is real – but so is the fisherman and the boat, filmed over a 1,000sq m (11,000sq ft) stretch of shore at Pendine Sands in South Wales – making it the world’s biggest set of its kind.
The short film was made by animators and student volunteers over just one week, using three Nokia N8 smartphones attached to a cherry picker 36m (118ft) in the air.
‘Gulp’, from Oscar-winning Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman Animations, is released today and tells the story of a lone fisherman who becomes fishfood himself before ... well, that would spoil the ending.
Co-director Will Studd said: ‘The film was a huge test of planning and coordination with mother nature. We were incredibly lucky with conditions and tide times – sometimes we got our final frame for the day just as the waves crashed in around our set.’
Prop designers built a life-size fishing boat, used by a ‘fisherman’ – pixelation artist William Todd. The fish, seagulls and sea were created with rakes.
Last year the team set the record for the world’s tiniest stop-motion character – a 9mm star called Dot.
