Bluebird Electric Team Hit With Setbacks at Pendine
Bluebird Electric Team Hit With Setbacks at Pendine: "Bluebird ElectricEver since the mid-1920, the Campbell family have used the Pendine sand in Carmarthenshire, Wales as the home for their Bluebird record attempts. This weekend, Don Wales – grandson of the celebrated Malcolm Campbell and nephew of Donald Campbell – and his son Joseph arrived there, hoping to bring glory to Britain.
The team behind the electric land speed record attempt has already been hit by countless hurdles in their quest for speed: delayed component parts, canceled runs, tight budgets, limited testing and a tight schedule. Added to all of this is the limited time between the low tides in which an attempt is viable.
On Saturday, the Bluebird Electric hit the Pendine sands for the first time, as Joseph took the seat for the second time in his career. Limited visibility from inside the cockpit resulted in the car bouncing several times on the uneven surface of the beach. The resulting impact damaged the bodyshell, steering components and disconnected a bottom wishbone."

Fishing Wales - fishery details
Fishing Wales - fishery details: "Situated on the northern edge of Carmarthen Bay Pendine is one of the classic Welsh storm beaches. Facing in a south-westerly direction this vast expanse of golden sands frequently plays host to the kind of rolling Atlantic surf which screams out to be fished. Flounder and bass are the main species and both can be caught pretty much the year round though for flounders October through to the New Year is the optimum time for specimen fish but the fishing can be almost equally as good during the spring and summer. For bass there are two productive periods firstly during the spring and then later in the year during autumn and early winter. Other species caught during spring and summer include dogfish a few silver eel's golden-grey mullet and an occasional small turbot."

Digital Couch Issue 24 | Tech Specialist B2C and B2B Marketing Blog from BANNER: "Nokia has not had the best year. With Apple and android taking a huge chunk out of the smartphone market, the Finnish manufacturer has gone from ubiquitous to: “Really? You still have a Nokia?”
But not a company to be put down, Nokia’s new N-Series devices have had some pretty impressive ad campaigns to match their smartphone technology. The N8 “Gulp” campaign, by UK agency Wieden+Kennedy, was shot on Pendine Beach in Wales with a bunch of spades and lots of time. Aimed at creating the world’s largest stop-motion video, sand, “Wallace & Grommit” creators Aardman came together to tell a fishy tale.
The most impressive feature? The entire video was shot on the 12Mpx N8 smartphone camera. It’s just a pity you have to wait nearly a minute and a half to find out."

EcoVelocity motor show: Bluebird stars at Battersea power station - mirror.co.uk: "Bluebird
It’s not the world’s sexiest motor show, but it might be technically interesting and even one of the most relevant.
We’re talking about EcoVelocity, the green motor show taking place at London’s Battersea power station today and over the weekend.
If it sounds like an event full of people in green corduroy trousers discussing how many mpg they get from their Toyota Priuses, then don’t panic. It’ll be more fun than that.
For starters there will be some impressive green supercars on show, such as the Bluebird electric land speed record car.
Bluebird had a disappointing summer after a crash at Pendine Sands in Wales but the team won’t give up easily and one day they’ll triumph. And Bluebird looks fantastic."

Volunteers sought for big beach clean-up bid | This is South Wales: "VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help clear Pendine beach of rubbish next weekend.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) says it urgently needs volunteers to join the fight to stem the rising tide of rubbish that is appearing on Welsh beaches.
The most recent survey, carried out in 2010 by MCS, revealed the highest levels of litter on beaches in Wales since MCS began collecting data 18 years ago.
This year's Beachwatch Big Weekend takes place on September 17 and 18, and the results will be published next spring.
The initiative involves local individuals, groups and communities heading to the coast to survey and clean up beaches, making it the most influential fight against marine litter in Wales.
Gill Bell, Wales programme manager for MCS, said: "We really need to get a clearer picture of the state of Welsh beaches to take to the Welsh Government. We would like to see more beaches cleaned, including Pendine Sands."

No plans for attempt at speed record this year | This is South Wales: "NO FRESH attempts at a land speed record are likely to take place in Pendine this year.
The sands at the popular tourist attraction have seen renewed attempts to set speed records in 2010 and 2011.
The latest attempt, held last month, saw hundreds of people descend on the village to witness the grandson and great grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, Don and Joe Wales, trying to break the UK electric car speed record.
Unfortunately Joe, 19, hit a pothole in the sand while manning the Bluebird Electric car, causing damage to the suspension bringing the record attempt to a halt.
Martin Rees, project director said at the time: "Damage was caused to a suspension component which meant we couldn't carry on although thankfully Joe was all right."
Joe suffered minor whiplash after hitting the pothole. The current record stands at 137mph."

» ‘Gulp’, the world’s largest stop motion video shot with the Nokia N8 [experience-it-all]
» ‘Gulp’, the world’s largest stop motion video shot with the Nokia N8 [experience-it-all]: "The creative minds at Sumo Science at Aardman have constructed a short film called Gulp, the world’s largest stop motion video. It was shot using the Nokia N8 smartphone which features a 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. A very tall crane was also used to help shoot the various scenes; the largest scene stretches over 11,000 square feet! It was done on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales. It only makes sense that the same group behind the world record-breaking ‘largest stop-motion animation set’ is also behind the construction of the world’s smallest stop motion video which can be seen here. Nokia’s phones might not have been all the rage in the States, but you cannot deny the delicate precision of the cameras built inside them. Jump after the break to go behind-the-scenes of the impressive Gulp."

All Wales coast path « Dicmortimer's Blog: "The Welsh government is committed to creating a continuous 850-mile path around the entire coastline of Wales by 2012. Work has been proceeding apace over the last few years, with missing sections completed between Prestatyn and Llandudno, Amroth and Pendine, Burry Port and Llanelli, Llanmadoc and Port Eynon, Port Talbot and Porthcawl and Aberthaw and Barry. Even the tricky Flintshire coast between Connah’s Quay and Point of Ayr is being dealt with, but I fear that there’s a section that will frustrate the whole project: the Cardiff coast"
