No plans for attempt at speed record this year | This is South Wales

No plans for attempt at speed record this year | This is South Wales: "NO FRESH attempts at a land speed record are likely to take place in Pendine this year.

The sands at the popular tourist attraction have seen renewed attempts to set speed records in 2010 and 2011.

The latest attempt, held last month, saw hundreds of people descend on the village to witness the grandson and great grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell, Don and Joe Wales, trying to break the UK electric car speed record.

Unfortunately Joe, 19, hit a pothole in the sand while manning the Bluebird Electric car, causing damage to the suspension bringing the record attempt to a halt.

Martin Rees, project director said at the time: "Damage was caused to a suspension component which meant we couldn't carry on although thankfully Joe was all right."

Joe suffered minor whiplash after hitting the pothole. The current record stands at 137mph."
